How to classify polyneuropathy by electrodiagnostic?

Abstract

Objectives: to evaluate the existing electrodiagnostic criteria for classifying a polyneuropathy as axonal, demyelinating or mixed.
Methods: were consulted Medline, CINAHL, Scielo and Embasse databases and Dimitru, Oh, Kimura, Preston and Tan textbooks.
Results: for demyelinating polyneurophaties eighteen criteria were found, four for axonal and two for mixed. To be supported by scientific societies were chosen, for demyelinating polyneurophaties, the criteria proposed by the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) and the European Federation of Neurological Societies/ Peripheral Nerve Society (EFSN/PNS). For mixed and axonal polineurophaties the criteria proposed for diferents autors were described.
Conclusions: the electrodiagnosis is fundamental to the study, evolution and prognosis of polyneuropathy.
