Abstract

Peripheral neuropathy is an infrequent but known complication of carbon monoxide poisoning. We present the case of 3 family members with signs and symptoms of peripheral nerve lesion after a fire exposure. The clinical presentation varied between the siblings, and included lower extremity weakness, numbness and burning pain. Electrodiagnostic studies performed 14 days after the event demonstrated non-specific changes. One of the patients continued follow-up and the studies at 12 months confirmed demyelinating and axonal injury. The history of fire exposure in the presence of signs and symptoms of peripheral neuropathy should raise a high clinical suspicion for carbon monoxide poisoning, even in the absence of specific electrodiagnostic features.
