Introduction. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and establishes that healthy lifestyles are actions that modify cardiovascular risk factors. Physical activity reduces cardiovascular risk and can modify the weight and the body composition; therefore, analyzing the body composition and the level of physical activity of the individuals is of great importance.
Objective. To characterize the body composition and the degree of physical activity of the healthcare personnel of the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Service of the Central Military Hospital (Hospital Militar Central, HOMIL) in Bogotá, Colombia, during the year 2020.
Methods. Cross-sectional study conducted with 46 workers of the Service of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation of the HOMIL.
Results. Most of the participants were women (65%) belonging to different departments, mainly to physical therapy (37%), and they had a normal body mass index (BMI) (58.7%); 34.8% were overweight and 6.5% presented obesity. In the measurement of the body composition by electrical bioimpedance, it was observed that the majority of participants (69.6%) had a normal proportion of fat mass and that the volume of visceral fat was high in half of the population and normal in the other half. Physical activity in the majority of the population was moderate (47.8%), which could be associated with the fact that 70.6% of the workers spent four or more hours in sedentary activities.
Conclusion. The majority of the healthcare personnel belonging to the Service of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation of the HOMIL present a normal BMI; however, a large proportion are overweight and obese and only half have a moderate level of physical activity, revealing the presence of conditions that need to be corrected in order to avoid cardiovascular complications.
