Abstract

Neurogenic dysfunction of the lower urinary tract is a common consequence in patients with spinal cord injury, secondary to detrusor overactivity with compromise in two main functions: the storage and emptying of urine due to damage in the neurological control centers of urination. It is associated with significant morbidity and mortality, high costs in medical care and decreased quality of life, so it must be detected and treated early, as well as closelly followed to reduce the risk of deterioration of the upper urinary tract. The purpose of this chapter is to deal with some basic concepts in relation to the definition of epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical presentation, complications and treatment, the latter being the purpose of this review.
