Abstract

Introduction. Bainbridge-Ropers syndrome (BRPS; OMIM 615485) is a rare genetic disorder, first identified in 2013, that causes developmental delay, hypotonia, intellectual disability, and problems with growth, eating, and language acquisition. In managing this disorder, it is vital to consider the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health Version for Childhood and Adolescence (CIF-IA) as a tool to measure the evolution of physiotherapeutic intervention over time.

Case presentation. A female patient from Medellín (Colombia), without a history of high-risk childbirth, presented hypotonia and delayed motor development secondary to Bainbridge-Ropers syndrome. The CIF-IA was applied to the child under the selected 34 criteria for evaluation and monitoring of such evaluation. After 11 months of treatment with the Vojta method and electrotherapy, favorable evolution was observed: She achieved gait, language acquisition, interaction with her family, play with her sister, schooling, and sphincter control.

Conclusions. The longitudinal analysis based on the time of the patient’s treatment and from the CIF-IA showed changes in the 34 qualifiers selected throughout the intervention with Vojta therapy in combination with electrotherapy. Intervention with the Vojta method did not require prolonged treatment (11 months) or high consultation attendance to achieve good results.
