Abstract

Introduction: stroke is the leading cause of disability in adults. Body function ·and tasks scales are not frequently used in common practice to establish recovery and prognosis.

Objective: to construct a model for predicting motor and functional recovery in stroke patients using disability scales.

Materials and Methods: a longitudinal study of a sample of consecutive stroke patients was conducted. In every patient, an initial assessment using a structured questionnaire and a final assessment eight months later with Barthel Index was performed. Finally, a logistic regression was constructed to define the most significative variables related to recovery.

Results: seventy-one patients were assessed. Twdnty patients· (28.2%) were alive and indepedent 8 months after stroke. Forty patients hactl a Barthel Index score of Jess than 85 (26\patients) or had died (14 patients). Eleven patients could not be followed. Logistic regression analysis established that for every 10 points of increment in Barthel Index in the first
20 days post-stroke, the probability of remaining alive and independent 8 months after stroke was increased with an Odds Ratio of 1.64 (CI: 1.2 - 2.1, p=O.OOO).


Conclusion: Barthel Index's initial score is the most useful single variable for predicting survival and motor recovery 8 months after stroke.
