Abstract

Objective: To describe the epidemiological characteristics of traumatic spinal cordinjury (SCI) patients and their complications in acute phase.

Materials and methods: Retrospective study of 359 medical charts of patients admitted in our hospital in the period: january of 2003 to the december of 2009.

Results: 83% were males, the age of majority (55 %) was between 19 and 40 years old; the most common causes of spine cord injury were falls (42%) and traffic accidents (38%). There was a predominance of paraplegic patients (59%) and Frankel grade A (59%). We observed a statistically significant decrease in injuries caused by car crashes (p=0,008). There is also a tendency to increase in injuries caused by gunshot wounds and motorcycle accidents. The most prevalent complications were urinary tract infection (60%), pressure ulcers (45%), bronchopneumonia (22,5%) and heterotopic ossification (15,3%).
