Quality of life in elderly people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease associated to pulmonary rehabilitation

Objective: To determine if the physical conditioning, generated in a pulmonary rehabilitation program, improves the quality of life in elderly patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) who are captive in the Geriatric Hospital San Isidro of Manizales in the first semester of 2011.
Methodology: Community-based study involving 3 patients who fulfilled the criteria to be included in a physical conditioning program, as the main component of the pulmonary rehabilitation, conducted during 27 sessions, three times a week. The method of data collection was carried out through clinical assessment, spirometric classification
and exercise tolerance tests. The results of the quality of life were measured using the Chronic Respiratory Disease Questionnaire (CRQ).
Results: The comparison between the punctuation of the questionnaires applied before and after the physical conditioning revealed that the dimensions of the quality of life
related to the health of patients with COPD, such as dyspnea, disease control and fatigue, showed clinically considerable changes in the patients involved. No significant changes in the study were reported for the dimension related to the emotional function.
Conclusion: The implemented fitness program allowed an improvement in the quality of life of the patients involved in this process, showing clinically predominant changes
that affected positively the activities of daily life. Cases that registered higher degree of improvement were those who finished the program.
