Abstract

Objective: describe the evolution of knees with osteoarthrosis that had received intraarticular viscosupplementation.

Method: Hialuronic acid was applied to knees of a sample of patients and pain was evaluated before and after the infiltration. Patients were followed through time and the requirement of new infiltrations, the pain relief and the time between cycles was assessed.

Results: from a total of 63 infiltrated knees, 40 were reevaluated. 35% (14/40) reported sustained improvement and 35% (14/40) received a second cycle of viscosupplementation with an average 11 month interval and a difference of median pain = 4.10 (p=0.0058).

Conclusion: a third of viscosupplementated knees did not require additional treatment than the first cycle. Knees that received a second cycle of viscosupplementation reported statistically significant pain relief.
