Abstract

Introduction. It is estimated that in Colombia there are more than 300 specialists in physical medicine and rehabilitation, without currently knowing their working conditions and how these have been affected by the health emergency caused by Covid-19.

Objectives. To perform a characterization of the work situation of specialists in physical medicine and rehabilitation in Colombia and describe the impact of the health emergency in the country by Covid-19, in their clinical practice.

Methods. A virtual survey of physiatrists in Colombia was carried out between 05 and May 2020; the questionnaire included 49 questions about work profile, satisfaction with specialty and aspects of the health emergency by Covid-19.

Results. 171 physiatrists from 26 departments in Colombia answered the questionnaire; among the findings, we found that the highest percentage of physiatrists works in the private sector (53.6 %) and the most frequent type of recruitment is the provision of services (54.2 %); 68.5 % are satisfied with their monthly remuneration, which has been affected by the health emergency, since 55.6 % reporting a reduction in their income of more than 50 %, associated with the closure of services as outpatient clinic (51.9 %). The Covid-pandemic has also generated fear of death (50.9 %) and get sick (75.4 %) among professionals in this area.

Conclusions. It is important to have a complete occupational profile of the country’s physiatrists, in order to take measures that mitigate the consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic in the sector.
