Abstract

The initial impact of a spinal cord injury (SCI) is always devastating for the person and the family. Just sixty years ago, when the life expectancy for anyone with SCI didn’t go beyond some weeks or months, the situation improved significantly thanks to the work of distinguished medical pioneers in this field, mainly in Europe and in the United States. In Latin America and the Caribbean, even though the trained human resources in the field and the health services for these people have improved significantly during the last years, there is still a lot to do. For many people with this type of lesion, the situation continues being quite distressing and even desperate. This confront us to huge challenges that at the same time demand huge efforts, commitments, alliances and changes in public policies and within the health systems.
