Abstract

Objective:
To describe the experiences of people with TRM and their caregivers about the rehabilitation process.

Methodology: Qualitative research with hermeneutic phenomenology as a method of analysis. Information was obtained by inter viewing 12 people with TRM and 11 caregivers.

Results: We collected experiences regarding life changes, difficulties, supports and expectations in the rehabilitation process. Consideration was given to body functions and structures, activities, participation and relationship with the environment.

Conclusions: Analysis of the experiences of the study population, showed that even if rehabilitation professionals seem to aim for integral rehabilitation, many of them have a restricted view and focus their efforts on the biological component, without considering social inclusion. In addition, institutions do not have the infrastructure or resources required to offer a complete service; they neglect the components of promotion, prevention, and equal opportunities. Both the TRM patient and their caregiver undergo drastic changes in their lives, however the latter feel excluded from the rehabilitation process. Patients and caregivers also face daily, barriers in the environment in which they operate.
